Blake Shimanek is a former Keller officer who came into the news after being involved in the pepper spraying and arrest of a man who was recording his son’s traffic stop. The officer was previously taken off patrol before his resignation and was demoted two ranks.
Dillon Puente was on his way to his grandmother’s house in August 2020 when he was stopped by a police officer in the Riverdance area. His father, Marco Puente, was following Dillon to his grandmother’s house when he was pulled over and began filming the incident.
On bodycam footage, Shimanek threatens Marco Puente with arrest if he stays in the roadway with his truck. Marco began recording his son’s arrest on his phone after obeying the order to move his vehicle.
The police officer is shown on a bodycam video asking Dillon to get out of his vehicle before placing him in handcuffs. Shimanek then orders Officer Ankit Tomer to arrest Marco as well.
Shimanek then forced Marco to the ground, attempting to arrest him and spraying him with pepper spray in the face.
Blake Shimanek Indictment- What Did He Do?
Blake Shimanek has been indicted for official oppression in connection with an arrest last summer in which he authorized another officer to pepper-spray a dad who was filming his son’s traffic stop.
On Friday, a Tarrant County grand jury issued an indictment against Blake. According to the indictment, he purposefully subjected the victim to illegal arrest and mistreatment.
The incident attracted criticism from the public. Keller Police Chief Brad Fortune stated that it “caused great disappointment and regret.” Brad expressed regret over the situation.
Shimanek was demoted after an internal investigation. In February, he resigned from the police department. The officer who pepper-sprayed the father was not charged because officials said he was only carrying out orders.
Because of this incident, not only did Blake lose his job, but he faced wide criticism. After bodycam footage was revealed, Shimanek was sentenced guilty.
